Wayne County Public Library

Marty Tschetter Memorial Internship – Summer 2024

Overview

Wayne County Public Library’s Local History Department houses a number of special collections which document and tell the story of our county’s history. We also have an online digital exhibit space, Wayne County Memory, which is powered by Pass it Down. The Marty Tschetter Memorial Internship was established in 2021 in memory of former Local History Librarian Marty Tschetter.

This internship will be on-site at Wayne County Public Library’s main library located in Goldsboro during the hours that the Local History Room is staffed:  9:00 AM – 5:30 PM Monday – Friday.

Project

The Local History Department is revitalizing its digital presence. This process includes the digitization of those parts of our collection which we feel would aid in our patrons’ research as well as the organization of oral histories. To make our oral history recordings accessible, we aim to move them to a digital exhibit which will be dedicated solely to oral histories. Additionally, we are seeking to digitize and digitally display portions of our permanent collection. This will include digitization, metadata completion, and organization into a digital exhibit.

The intern will:

  • Become familiar with the process of digitizing selections from our collection including photographs, photographic negatives, documents, and other ephemera
  • Develop an understanding of best practices in Oral History collection, transcription, and accessibility
  • Be trained by LH Staff on the process of collecting and processing oral histories
  • Attend trainings for Pass It Down and Webflow, conducted by our Pass it Down representative
  • Create well organized and thoughtful digital exhibits from digitized materials
  • Become aware of the daily operations of a local history department in a public library
  • Complete a final report/presentation regarding the internship experience and completed project
