Local History Assistant, Paul Saylors, will present his research on one area of African-American businesses in Goldsboro: South James Street. This presentation will address sources used to conduct this research, the businesses that existed in a particular time period, changes over time, and also the silences in the archival record as they relate to African-American history. We recognize that James Street is just one area where African-American businesses thrived in Wayne County and that many more spaces need to be studied and documented. After, we will provide information on how community members can document and share memories of historic businesses, places, and individuals in our community-based digital exhibit: Wayne County Memory.
